"Yogi" Berra said, "The game isn't over until it's over." Unfortunately, for many of my students, the game is over as soon as you ask them to write!
My students are very active and socially aware fifth graders and are at that age when they will "shut down" when asked to complete assignments that are difficult for them.
My students are very transient, and many come from active duty military households. Moving and adapting to their surroundings is difficult enough, yet they must also struggle with learning the ins-and-outs of a new classroom and curriculum.
My Project
I am requesting an iPad and dock connector to use in my classroom. Many of my students find writing "painful" and "shut down" when asked to write. I want and need to change that mindset! I plan on using various writing apps to help teach writing skills. My students will be practicing and refining their writing skills while blogging. They will be so excited about blogging, they won't even notice that they're writing! You've got to be clever when dealing with fifth graders!
Being a competent writer is an essential life skill that will open many opportunities for my students.
By donating to this project, you will be helping me instill the love of writing within my fifth graders.
