Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever tried listening to music or a listening to an audio book and had headphones that did not work? Having faulty headphones would make your listening experience extremely difficult especially if you do not want to disturb the person next to you.
Our students attend a Title I school in New York, which means that 98% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Our school also offers a healthy snack. Our school is located in a high poverty area where technology is limited. Sometimes the only technology that they will know will be in a classroom. I am a special educator in an ICT classroom (Integrated Co-Teaching). In an ICT classroom, there are two teachers and the students consist of general education and special needs students. I am the special educator in the class aforementioned, but I support the needs of ALL of our students.
My Project
In our ICT class we use the Station Teaching model during our literacy block. Stations are like centers but instead of one teacher facilitating you have two teachers facilitating a station (small group learning) and there can be one or more independent stations. One of those independent stations in our class is our computer station. The other independent station is for phonics. We have computers in our class but our headphones are broken. These headphones will help our students maximize their experience at our computer station. Right now it is extremely loud during station time and one of the reasons is because the computers are blaring. Getting these headphones will provide more opportunities for students to play math games, listen quietly to stories read online, and other ELA activities. These headphones will also allow the opportunity for the students to stay focused on their own screen. Having the literacy games will help the children learn in a fun and engaging way.
Having distractions in an ICT class takes away from instruction.
Listening to instruction (during small group station time) and reading materials is very important and can help with accuracy and fluency in reading. During those times being quiet is key. Please help us get these headphones and literacy games so my students have even more opportunities to LISTEN and LEARN! Thank you for all your help in advance!
