I teach approximately 16 4th-6th grade special education students. Teaching in a low-income school district can pose many challenges yet it is so rewarding. My district places a high priority on academics first and foremost. That being said, students can benefit academically when extracurricular actives become part of their lives as well. My district offers a number of academic supports in addition to extracurricular activities. I am excited that so many of our students have taken an active part in these activities.
My students are hard-working and strive to do the best they can despite many of the challenges they face.
All students, especially those in low-income districts, can easily become distracted by the troubles of everyday life and then are faced with task demands at school. Students in 4th-6th grade rotate from classroom to classroom for their core subjects before completing their daily work. Some are offered support through special education in the mainstream classroom and others receive separate instruction in the special education room. In all that they are asked to do, they do their best each and every day.
My Project
Students are expected to sit and work so much throughout their school day. For many, this can be a very difficult job. When students are given power through choice, they are more involved and engaged in their learning and education. Having portable standing desks in my classroom will give students the opportunity to stand and work or sit and work as they choose. This will empower the students and will help them be more engaged and active in their education.
Students can benefit from standing in so many ways.
Health experts have identified many benefits of standing desks. Some of these include a boost in productivity, improved mood and energy levels, and burning calories just to name a few. Students need to know that it is okay to work while sitting or standing. They need to do what is going to work best for them. Standing desks will give students the opportunity to make these decisions quickly with minimal distraction to the other students. Students need to work in ways they know they will learn best.
