This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Rhyming is an important concept for students to learn in kindergarten. Many of my students struggle to understand that the middle and end of the word should stay the same, but the beginning should change. We need materials to approach this concept in multiple ways.

I teach at a great elementary school in a small town in Texas.

My students come from loving families that are struggling in these hard economic times. With newly updated numbers, 93 percent of the students at my school come from low-income households. Most receive free lunch. All students are now receiving free breakfast through a federal program. With their bodies nourished, it's time to feed their minds.

My Project

The first item we would like to have is a set of Word Family Readers. This is a set of 20 big books that all children would be able to see, hear, and discuss. We could also use a Word Family Pocket Chart and Word Family Picture Wheels. These use pictures and words to reinforce the concept of rhyming. For individual practice during centers, it would be nice to have a Rhyming Sounds Instant Learning Center and Sound-Sorting Phonics Trains. Students could use these to practice on their own. Finally, Beginning to Read Bingo sets would round out our new materials. With sets for the alphabet, beginning sounds, rhyming, and picture words, we can reinforce multiple phonics skills, including rhyming.

I love light bulb moments, when a student finally understands a concept that has been difficult for them.

I just know with these new rhyming materials, my students will see the light and shine bright!
