I teach in a unique school located in a working class and immigrant neighborhood in the southeast section of San Francisco. The school consists of Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade classes with English Learner Development, Spanish Bilingual and Chinese Bilingual classrooms available. I teach the ELD class full of English language learners who speak more than one language at home. In addition, I teach a diverse group of ELD students from 4 other classes daily for 30 minutes. The majority of the school qualifies for free school lunch. I have some students who have challenges and need help with emotional self-regulation.
All students need modeling and repeated practice.
Material resources enrich their development and address their special needs outside traditional textbooks. The classroom was bare upon me moving to a new school. I also transitioned from teaching 5th grade for four years straight to first grade. This is my 2nd year at this school and want to build up my classroom with much needed instructional materials. I want to provide rich learning experiences and need materials to provide multiple ways to address student equity, social emotional intelligence, and critical literacy.
My Project
The 3 items requested will make a difference daily in student's learning lives. The colored pencils will help them get creative and express themselves. Currently, the school only provides crayons. The classroom timer will keep us on a growth mindset path keeping time to provide clear start and finish times. It will provide one more way to discuss how we can continue to improve as learners. Student rely on the teacher to keep time and a timer would make us independent to stay focused. The timer would also provide clear boundaries to my special needs students. I have a few who have a hard time when transitions are called. The timer would be a great tool for all students. The cushions are needed to provide alternative seating for students with challenges of staying on rug and sitting still.
