Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth-grade teacher in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. My fourth graders come primarily from the Dominican Republic. Their knowledge of world affairs is generally not very broad; some of my students thought the name of the president of the United States was Leonel (the name of the current president of the Dominican Republic). However, our social-studies unit of study for fourth grade is about New York, so I do not have the ability in our regular curriculum to broaden their horizons about current events around our world.
To try to fix this situation, I am requesting a class subscription to "Time for Kids" magazine--"Time" magazine's edition for children--as a way to expand their perspective without changing my social-studies unit. The students will be able to spend a period per week reading the magazine and discussing what is going on in the world. We will still be doing our mandated work, but the children will also gain information about the wider world around them.
The students will also be able to use this subscription to read science articles, which will help prepare them for the state science test (almost a third of the fourth grade in our school failed this test in 2004).
I hope you will help these students expand their knowledge of what is current in our world so they can begin to understand their part in history and perhaps grow up to make some history of their own.
