Giving children an opportunity to read about current events in a magazine that grabs their attention is just what "TIME for Kids" does. "TIME for Kids" will enhance my project based learning environment, allowing my students to practice and build their valuable reading skills.
I teach two 2nd grade Social Studies classes.
My school is considered Title 1 and many of my students are economically disadvantaged. The assessments today require children to be exposed to non-fiction material and "TIME for Kids" really gets children excited to read about the world around them. The magazine's articles will allow me to teach various reading strategies and expose my students to non-fiction vocabulary. "TIME for Kids" enhances a child's interest in reading with vibrant and real life photographs that gets them interested in learning more about the topic. Second graders are eager to learn with lots of energy. My goal is to build on their eagerness while maintaining their attention with stimulating and exciting non-fiction reading material.
My Project
My project will enhance my reading instruction by allowing my students to build the necessary reading skills required while reading non-fiction texts. The news and theme-based issues will help to build critical thinking skills. The writing is age appropriate with vivid images to engage students in reading while supporting Common Core State Standards. The subscription will also allow my students to an interactive digital edition bringing each issue to life. Hands-on activities and projects will be built based on the content that are in the monthly issues. "TIME for Kids" covers a wide range of real world topics and themes children just love to learn about! It is the BEST children's magazine in the world and every student should have the exposure to reading one!

They will have opportunities to build projects based on the topics learned, while enhancing their vocabulary.
