We are in dire need of a new rug. The current rug we have is badly stained, tattered, and in overall poor condition.
My students are from all different backgrounds and environments, from eager first-generation immigrants to generations of family members attending the same school.
They are intuitive, intelligent, diligent, and amazing beings who have overcome much adversity. In our school, 75% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch; many are bussed in from low-income neighborhoods and may not have access to all the necessary resources for developing their academic growth and potential. Despite this, they come to school with positive attitudes towards learning and a wealth of knowledge they can share with their teachers and classmates. As the year goes on, it is a privilege to watch my students develop their skills and help them achieve their greatest potential. It is my duty to provide them with the tools and resources necessary to make them successful and become life-long learners.
My Project
Our school runs on a very tight budget. As a result, basic classroom furniture is usually low on the priority list and are rarely replaced. The rug that we have now has been used by hundreds of children over the years. It is soiled, stained, tattered, and has an odor! No matter how many times I have personally vacuumed, spot cleaned, and on occasion steam cleaned this rug, it still seems to remain filthy. In each classroom the rug is the focal teaching area where students participate in read alouds, small or whole group discussions, everyday instruction, and independent work. Since our floors are not carpeted, the rug also offers students a comfortable place to sit besides their desks.
