My students will be the big winners!!
I am a fifth grade teacher at rural elementary school in Indiana. I teach math, English, language arts, and social studies. Our school has 33% of our students on free or reduced lunches. I have an excellent group of students.
Blank faces staring back at me during a lesson I thought was going to knock their socks off. Hours spent pondering how to solve this problem. Of course, engaging the students in the subjects I am teaching is my number one goal. Students learn significantly better when they have hands on experiences that really get them involved in the topic at hand. I would love to dream up and make different games to aid in teaching my class, but realistically I can't find the time. When I heard about this website, the first thing that came to mind was GAMES! GAMES! GAMES! My students love when I pull out the few games I have. What better way to engage my students than with a fresh supply of games!
I carefully selected games I felt would best tie into the curriculum at my school as well as the state standards. One item I selected was the Eggspert. It is used to create a "game show" atmosphere and will spice up the games I have as well as new games. I also chose games dealing with math, English/language arts, and social studies. The specific topic I selected were topics I have noticed my students having difficulties mastering. I find that students are more willing to work on topics they are struggling with if the work is enjoyable. It never fails...if they enjoyed the game they will ask to play it again. I never feel the need to remind them it is educational, but that thought is always in the back of my head!
