Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach instrumental music to our 4th and 5th grade students in our building. These kids are fantastic individuals with a lot of learning potential that goes along with their great attitudes and their creativity. I have a diverse population of students who comes from all different backgrounds, different cultures, and different communities.
These students have an amazing amount of natural talent when it comes to the various arts, including, but not limited to: music, dance, acting, and art.
What makes them so special in my eyes is that they display leadership, character, empathy, compassion, and citizenship when trying to delve into their natural talents. I've seen the students in music classes who sing for church and get a chance to encourage their peers to come out of their shells and sing along with them. I've seen students volunteer to do a presentation for the entire school and act in front of their peers while exuding the confidence that most adults haven't mastered yet.
These kids are the hardest working young people I have ever had the pleasure of teaching.
My Project
In our district we provide the equipment and instruments to all the students in the band program at the elementary level. Many of the students are using instruments that are older and have small pieces of equipment need to be replaced. The purpose of purchasing these smaller items (ligatures and neck straps, etc.) is to replace the ones that will eventually no longer be useful in the next few years.
Our students take pride in taking care of their instruments while they are learning how to play them throughout the year.
The students learn how to take care of something so valuable and take charge in making sure they put their instruments together correctly. I want to give the students the very best materials I can offer them so they can continue to take pride in the instruments that they have chosen to learn. They deserve to play on instruments with new neck straps that are soft and comfortable, and with new ligatures that won't break after a few uses. Getting these materials will also help me recycle the older ones out so no student has to use broken or very used equipment.
