My Students
Four simple words . . . "Tell me a story." Those four words are at the heart of the 60 Minutes award winning television news magazine. Those same words WERE spoken by my students every day! Thanks to generous donors, my students now have a listening center, but now they need MORE BOOKS!
My students attend a public school in the one of the poorest congressional districts in the nation.
Most, if not all, are the children of immigrants from families on public assistance or low income households.
Many of my first grade students are failing to achieve success with beginning reading skills. Some of them have special needs and/or a learning disability.
My Project
Having a variety of books on tape (or CDs) will provide my students with repeated exposure to their favorite high interest books and the important sight word vocabulary that is necessary for success in beginning literacy and to gain confidence in reading books at grade level.
"There is no better tool than a book.
It can pry open the locks of poverty and hopelessness and make way for dreams that take hold. --Marian Wright Edelman, Founder & President, The Children's Defense Fund.
