Mrs. Richardson from Richmond VA is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a Kindle Fire and Apple accessories, plus an adult size chair so they will have a place to sit and enjoy reading.

Drop Everything And Read is DEAR to us, but we want to jazz it up and add our voices. Can you help us by adding more technology to the mix and get us speaking and listening even more.
I teach at an urban school that provides Federal programs like Free and Reduced Lunch and Title 1 to economically disadvantaged boys and girls.
My students are an energetic bunch of children living in single parent homes, or being raised by grandparents or great-grandparents, or with absent parents because of circumstances like military duty. Even with family and community support, I would love to say that my students have everything that they need to be successful. Each day I walk into our classroom and provide them with the knowledge and skills that they will need to make a future for themselves. My students try very hard every day to put their best foot forward. They want to be college-bound or military-ready so that they can have a better life. This can happen if they have the necessary technology and tools to keep them on pace and even with the rest of the world.
This year I want to continue with our revamping of DEAR time. Instead of just having my students drop everything and read, I want them to improve their speaking, listening, and viewing skills. With the new objectives in our language arts curriculum, we want to develop the whole reader and that includes adding all five senses to build comprehension and fluency. By having more Kindles, plus accessories to protect and charge them, in the classroom, each student will have more individual time to complete reading assignment because they will not have to wait so long for their turn with the devices. I will be able to individualize each collection on the eReaders to my students' current reading level. Because the collections are stored on the Kindles, no one will know what level the other is reading on. It will decrease the embarrassment of not reading on grade level. The addition of the adult size chair will give them a place to read to their reading buddies and the accessories will allow us to protect, cover, and store the Kindles.
I want them to be confident and start to develop skills and knowledge that would allow an individual to make informed and effective decisions through their understanding and use of technology.
Use of technology will lead them to financial literacy. All students need to learn the right things that will make them effective lifetime learners in order to take care of themselves and their future.
