I work in a public school in Springfield, Illinois. We are a Title I school with many students in poverty.
The students I work with come from hard-working families that strive to provide the best for their children that they can.
Many of their parents work two jobs, are being raised by a grandparent, or may even be homeless. These students want to be successful but don't always know what it means to be a scholar.
These students look forward to coming to my classroom every day where they can read in an environment where they can feel success. Sometimes this is the only time of the day when they can really concentrate on their favorite reading materials.
My Project
Students need to know that reading is an important part of their world. As we see on television, stars are classified as rock stars or athletes. The books chosen for this project showcase some of these career choices but also shows the trials and tribulations of what it means to be "a star." The books selected are star themed but are also high interest, which should encourage the readers to want to read and stay engaged. After the theme year is over, the books will be given away in a drawing at a special family reading night event.
The seat sacks are in dire need in this classroom for storage.
The seats will serve as book and material storage for the tiny classroom space that serves as the teacher's intervention classroom. This space was a former storage closet that is now a classroom for 6-7 students. These seat sacks will provide a place for the students to place their books when they come to the classroom.
