This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Phonics, and fluency, and comprehension... OH MY! Learning to read is no simple task. There are rules and exceptions to rules and, let's face it, it's just plain frustrating when words don't sound like they look!
It is a joy to teach my students because they have an admirable thirst for knowledge.
Their zeal and enthusiasm for learning new things inspires me. I teach at a Title I school where 90% of the students live below the poverty line. Their home lives may not be ideal, but they never use that as an excuse; they give everything their all!
Also, a number of my students have a limited vocabulary and struggle with comprehension due to English being their second language. These students need as many visuals as possible to ensure they understand the material. They deserve every opportunity necessary to master the concepts!
My Project
"If you can read this, thank your 1st grade teacher!" First grade is arguably the most important year because the primary goal teachers have is for each student to become a great reader. By providing my students with hands-on activities to make challenging concepts enjoyable, they'll be having too much fun to even notice they are learning to read!
I selected resources which cover a broad range of skills. The majority of the materials are activities and games that the students will use in small groups during reading centers. They provide the children opportunities to be thoroughly engaged while mastering concepts including word families, blends, digraphs, homophones, and compound words.
The Hear Myself Phones will help readers with phonemic awareness by allowing them to focus on each sound in the words they read. The Word-Of-The-Week Vocabulary Center will expose our class to exciting new words. The Building Fluency Card Bank will boost the students' speed, accuracy, and word recognition.
With generous donations from people like you, these materials will help make it possible for my students to master reading skills, which, we all know, they'll need for the rest of their lives.
Your belief in them and their success with the materials will not only help them to learn to read, but also to LOVE to read!
