I am a third-grade teacher in the New York City Teaching Fellows program. I work at a pre-kindergarten-through-eighth-grade public school in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, where we have a high concentration of low-income students. Many of my students have never been outside of Brooklyn--some have never even ventured out of their own neighborhood. Most of them are not aware of other states, cities, or countries outside of their own. In fact, I discovered that many of them think that Brooklyn is the capital of the United States! I would like to expose them to what's happening in the world around them in a fun and engaging way, so that they can realize that the world is a lot bigger than Brooklyn. I want them to dream big and to strive for greatness, and they have a hard time doing that when their worldview only encompasses a few city blocks. I am asking for a year's subscription to "Time for Kids" magazine for my thirty students. This magazine is great--it describes current events in an easy-to-read way, and it introduces the children to other parts of the world that they might never have heard of before. Every week, the children will receive a new magazine filled with information, educational games, trivia questions, and more. There is also a teacher's guide that suggests possible lessons for the classroom using the magazine. Please help our children learn about the world that they live in and have a good time doing it! I thank you, and my children thank you.
