My Students
My students live in southwest Ohio, surrounded by agriculture and failing infrastructure. Because the school has declining enrollment, opportunities for genuine learning opportunities must come from the creativity of our community and our teachers. Many of our families once had high paying factory jobs that have dried up and are now struggling to make ends meet.
My students seldom have the opportunity to meet people outside their impoverished almost all white school system.
Many of my students know that their academic performance may be their ticket out of our town. Others believe that their athletic talent will help them to a better life. Whichever path they choose, and many choose both, they push themselves to be perfect. This means they can be reluctant to try things that they don't already know how to do well and that they are often stressed and anxious.
My Project
We've read and discussed two great books this year and are eager to read this next Project Lit Community book choice. Odd One Out, by Nic Stone, is at the same time sweet and serious. "One Story. Three Sides. No Easy Answers."
LGBTQ students deserve to see themselves mirrored in books, and all students need to know how to be good friends and allies.
This book is a funny, real, and honest depiction of how relationships can go array, and how real friendship lasts, regardless of romance.
I want my students to have a chance to see a school different from their own, where students are accepted for who they are, so we can work to make our school a more accepting place.
