It's Not All About Me?! Building Classroom Community
My students need stories to help instill positive, caring relationships with each other and the teachers with whom they will work: The Recess Queen, The Tale of Sir Dragon: Dealing with Bullies for Kids (and Dragons), and The Nice Book.
Creating a classroom culture with caring, responsible first graders is important to me. I want my classroom to be a safe place for students to learn. Some of the best learning comes from making mistakes. I want my students to learn how to support each other through this process.
My first graders are an energetic group of students from central Minnesota.
We have a wonderful school with preschool, kindergarten, and first grade students. Our environment is very child-oriented, staffed with warm and caring adults, and filled with laughter. My students are eager to learn and quickly become my school family.
My Project
My students need stories to help instill positive, caring relationships with each other and the teachers with whom they will work: The Recess Queen, The Tale of Sir Dragon: Dealing with Bullies for Kids (and Dragons), and The Nice Book. Like any other classroom, we want to learn routines so we can begin learning academics. I want to take time to build relationships with my students to help them grow just as much socially and emotionally as they will academically throughout the year. I want an environment rich with print for my students to connect the concepts of desired behaviors and rules of the classroom. Stories with which students can relate to will have a stronger and longer lasting impact than just repeating rules. The books I have chosen have been recommended for social skills growth such as kindness, empathy, acceptance, handling fears, anti-bullying, etc. Not only do these stories have fabulous messages which will lead to great community building within our classroom, but will also spill into the students' home lives, as the skills they learn will continue on after the bell rings at the end of the day.
Your donation to my project would help me instill social skills desired for a classroom community of learning.
Our room would become a safe place to learn how to make mistakes, ask for forgiveness, forgive others, accept differences, amongst other character traits. We would be able to have rich interactions with stories purposefully written to help children grow socially and emotionally.
"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." Anne Frank
