Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine waking up each day with the desire to learn more than yesterday. You are motivated and determined to succeed. Now, imagine obstacles such as a low-income neighborhood, a high poverty level, and increased mobility rates. These are only a few examples of the daily experiences that interfere with the desire to be successful.
Despite the daily challenges, my students are motivated, capable, and extremely determined to absorb and share knowledge on a daily basis.
We are a Title I school comprised of a diverse population of students. Many of my students come from bilingual households and most receive free lunch and breakfast. The majority of my students are reading below grade level and many struggle with basic math computation. While we have limited access to basic supplies, we do not receive an individual classroom budget to supplement the necessities that will allow individualized success. I want to provide a classroom experience that allows each student to achieve to their highest potential.
My Project
My students need books that can be utilized during partner reading with various levels of readers. It can be difficult to find texts that are interesting and accessible to lower-level readers; however these book sets successfully fulfill both requirements.
With your generosity, I will be able to provide high interest/low readability book sets that will promote choice and contribute to a genuine interest in reading.
Even though my students are in 5th grade, many of them are reading one to three grade levels below that. Students who are preparing for junior high do not want to read books that they find babyish and uninteresting. Students who are struggling with reading need texts that will leave them wanting more. I want to instill a love of reading in my students and I know these books will do just that!
