Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with a very high needs population, in the largest urban city in our state. I work in a small school with a high population of students who come from homes where English isn't the first language. Many of my students also come from homes where parents don't speak any English. Over 50% of our students come from homes that do not have English spoken at all.
There are over 15 different languages represented within our community of 375 students.
The only time many of these students have access to the language is throughout the school day.
In addition to the language barriers we face daily, my students also have disabilities that range from ADHD to autism. They come from homes where parents are unavailable, due to work or due to the lack of understanding of their child's disability.
My Project
My students will be coming to first grade ready, willing and able to learn. Having the supplies like writing journals, construction paper, puzzle pieces for their feelings bulletin board, and white printer paper will start them off on the right track. In our school, we promote a positive atmosphere where feelings of all students matter.
Having the dry erase puzzle pieces will allow them to write their thoughts down for all to recognize throughout the year.
We've never met a first grade student who didn't love to color. The construction paper will allow them to use their creative side as they learn to adjust to the writing expectations. The journals will help them advance as they grow and are able to write more complete sentences.
