Many of my kids have been challenged by math in the past, but are still eager to learn. They come from very diverse cultural backgrounds. Many differentiated ways of learning have been tried by past teachers with some success.
Having tutored students after school last year using the board, I found significant success. My kids have told me that they haven't been to the board much in the past. They absolutely love going to the board and "teaching" the class or getting peer tutoring as well.
Students will not only gain confidence in their ability to problem solve, but also practice mentorship by helping fellow struggling students. The cooperative learning experience at the board cannot be matched by group seat work. At the board they rally to become a community of learners, supporting and encouraging each other!
In Their Own Words
Mr. Brennan wants us to not be afraid to take risks and try to speak in front of others. He likes when we help each other at the board and teach the rest of the class what we learned. We just enjoy working together to learn more than we can ourselves. (Sean)
We will all get all get the chance to help each other. Mr. Brennan says we'll become better public speakers. I am less afraid to stand up in class and talk now that I've been to the board a few times. It's also nice to know that my friends are there to help me. (Laura Ann)
We have to pass a state Algebra 1 test to graduate. It was kind of scary at first, but not so much anymore. When I come back from the board I feel like I leaned something. Every time I go to the board it almost makes math fun for me. (Jamal)
