My students need a variety of literature to help them see the world. My goal is to have a diversified classroom library that will take my students many places and through many experiences.
My students come from a teeny-tiny school in an even smaller community. There aren't many opportunities for them to go out and see the world, except through literature.
They want to read, and I want to help them foster a love for reading.
Too often they ask for a book off of my shelf, and because I am so limited, they leave empty-handed. My fear is they won't be able to see the world outside of this small town.
And I want my few that say they don't like to read to finally find that book that changes their mind. They need to see the outside world.
My Project
My school places a big emphasis on Accelerated Reader, but students need to do more than pass a reading test. That's why I'm purchasing books that will grow a love of reading. Some are classics, and some are contemporary. Students will find characters that look and act like them.
My students need to see different perspectives from what they're used to.
Living in such a small community can hinder one's perspective, and the books will help students see there is more to life than a small town.
Though these books are for AR, I hope they do more than just pass a test. These books can open their eyes, minds, and hopefully hearts. They will experience tragedy, heartbreak, and hardships in these books, but they'll also see how characters persevere and love.
