Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is made up of 26 third graders. They are a hardworking group of amazing young ladies and gentlemen, sponges, eagerly soaking up all they can share during our school day.
Our school is a Title I school in Southern California.
82% of students are receiving free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch, and many are English Language Learners. Our campus is ethnically diverse, and students are working hard to overcome poverty and become fluent in the English language. They are amazingly resilient tiny people who want to be successful in life.
My Project
While part of a student's educational experience is focused on learning the standards based curriculum there are skills attained throughout the year that extend beyond classroom walls. I am working to build a community of students who give back when possible and do what they can to support those in need.
My students are eager to give back to malnourished children through the UNICEF Kid Power band program.
Currently in our classroom we do UNICEF Kid Power Ups on a daily basis which allow us to unlock RUTF's (Ready to use Theraputic Food packets) for every video completed. With the Kid Power band program we can continue to make this impact but students can also contribute to the giving for every 10,000 steps they get!
When I shared about this program with my class they immediately were hopeful we could get a set of bands for our class. They want to be able to help those in need and are excited to get their bodies moving at the same time.
