Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are my kids. We start every day with a smile and end each day with a hug or high five. We support and encourage each other and build relationships and memories that will shape their personalities and future. Each student in our class is unique; many are bilingual and English is their second language. Our classroom celebrates different ethnicities and cultures daily- we have students from many different countries- Somalia, Mexico, and Vietnam to name a few! Our school is located in a low income/high poverty area. Home life for many of our students can be unstable and difficult at times. Our class also has a high percentage of students with special needs (6/26).
Despite challenges, my 25 amazing third grade students are clever, determined, honest, and hardworking.
They deserve a classroom that feels like home, a place of love and comfort. Many come from difficult situations and almost all get free or reduced-price lunch. I want to create a place where students feel at safe and loved, where they are excited to come each day.
My Project
My students need equipment for indoor and outdoor recess, as well as P.E! This year, our physical education department has given each grade level equipment to use within the classroom. We were allotted 3 balls: one basketball, one soccer ball, and one cherry ball. With 25 students, this is not enough! To make matters worse, we recently lost our soccer ball and basketball over the fence. We were not able to retrieve these items once they went over. My students have been making a good effort at sharing, but there just isn't enough equipment. We have play structures and other items at recess, but there are also 200+ other students out for recess. For our class P.E. time, the loss of these items is detrimental. Our P.E. Coach has his own items and other classes to attend to, so we can't share with them. When I take the students out for P.E., we are now limited to one ball. This effects the activities we can play and the amount of time the students get to actually have a ball in their possession. The soccer balls and basketballs will be utilized both during recess for open play time and during our P.E. time. The yoga mats and cards would serve as a great activity to help students with stretching, mindfulness, and strength. My students have never done yoga and I think they can benefit from experiencing a new activity that can bring in reflection and relaxation.
I am an advocate of children living healthy and active lifestyles, however I see my students unmotivated because of the lack of equipment.
I am hoping with this additional equipment, I can motivate and get them back to having fun, being active and working together! Thank you for considering our class for your donation.
