Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the high school librarian of a mammoth urban 9-12 secondary school in California. About 10% of our students are second language learners from all over the globe. Another 10% receive Special Education services. In order to help these students effectively master English and assimilate to the American peer culture, I have created a conversation program where ESL and Special Education students meet regularly with typical English Only Speaking peers to play games. In order to allow this program to flourish, I need to be able to provide a steady stream of engaging educational and diverting board games to help the ESL and Special Education students practice English communication & expression and provide our English Only students with the opportunity to develop leadership skills and tolerance/empathy.
My Project
Many of our students are struggling with verbal fluency and linguistic expression because they are either recent immigrants to America from other countries or are intellectually disabled/autistic. These same students also tend to feel rather excluded from mainstream peer activity.
We are addressing these academic and interpersonal issues by designing a conversation program.
Through this spirited, motivational, and low stress environment, students gain greater comfort expressing themselves verbally and interacting with peers. And the English Only peers learn about empathy, leadership, and tolerance.
Every other week, ESL and students in Special Education get together with English Only peers in ROTC and Student Government to play language board games. Therefore, we are requesting a collection of board games such as Guess Who?, Quiddler, Trivial Pursuit, Last Word, I Spy, and Charades for Kids to keep our students engaged intellectually, linguistically, and interpersonally.
