Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the Reading Coach at a Title 1 school where most of our students are English Language Learners. Our school is made up of amazing children who lack the resources and life experiences that other children their age have. The students love coming to school because our amazing teachers and staff have created a welcoming environment and make learning fun.
Our students work hard every day and they walk in the door curious and excited about what they are going to learn each day.
Due to our school district adding more schools that have qualified for Title 1 status, our school's Title 1 budget has been decreased significantly and we are unable to purchase updated books that are on our student's reading level.
My main goal is to surround our students with different genres of reading materials so they find a love for reading. I want to provide our students with everything they need to succeed in life no matter their circumstance.
My Project
The We Both Read book set is a series designed for parent involvement and buddy reading because it features a shared reading format. The books have alternating pages written at higher and lower reading levels. Some of the books are written in English and Spanish which give our Non-English speaking parents the confidence to read with their child. The series is perfect for parents to read with their children during our parent involvement mornings, reading with tutors or volunteers, and buddy reading when our younger students read with our older students.
These books are particularly effective for at-risk, struggling, and reluctant readers because they create a safe environment where fluent reading is modeled and where children are set up for success.
I know this program will give our students the confidence they need to become independent readers because the students will love reading these high interest books in a comfortable place with someone that will support them.
