Welcome to middle school science in Alaska's interior! This year, I have approximately 130 students in grades 6 and 8; my partner science teachers have the additional 210 students. These learners represent one of the more diverse communities in north-central Alaska. My goal is to give my students the best available education in the time they are with me.
Our big push is for personalized, cross-content, culturally responsive education.
As such, I would like to incorporate more content from other subject areas into my science classes. I hope to find projects that allow for history, geography, math, and language arts to be combined with science.
My Project
Currently, my students and the other 8th grade science teacher's students (total of about 140) share five electricity and magnetism kits and five 1kg weight calibration sets, which means there are about six students trying to use each set at the same time, since we currently stagger out lessons that our classes don't need the same materials on the same day. This is getting more and more difficult to do, and it would be impossible for 12 students to share a single set.
We need more materials in order to ensure that each students gets sufficient hands-on time with the items provided.
As a school and as a classroom, I am in need of five additional electricity and magnetism kits, some plastic storage boxes (these kits only come in an easily damaged cardboard box), additional batteries, and some more calibration weights for their current work in force and motion.
