Help me give my students graphic novels of Coraline; we currently do not have a class set and since it has so much imagery already--adding in the visual aspect will add to their learning and enjoyment.
My students enjoy stories. When I read they are rapt and attentive, the most well behaved usually! They make such wonderful connections to their own lives through their reading. Middle School is a difficult transition for some as they learn more about themselves as individuals. All of them have unique challenges like helping out at home while parents work, even helping with younger siblings, some of them deal with extraordinary amounts of stress, are in custody battles, foster homes.
School is sometimes the only truly structured and reliable fixture of their young lives.
I have a lot of students who don't describe themselves as good readers, even ones with high Lexiles. They lack confidence at times but when I stop let them think, let them collaborate, their eyes shine with excitement. Yes, they are good readers!
All of my students loved reading Coraline, loved to talk about the suspenseful moments, especially when we knew things the main character didn’t. I want them to feel that way about all books.
My Project
Having a physical copy of this book will mean a lot to these kids, and having the graphic novel aspect will be even more appealing. I think they will be more engaged and excited to see what happens next.
I am a lover of classics to graphic novels because of the appeal to all types of readers.
I hope to gather more of these into our classroom library. Giving these kids a different learning experience will hopefully make lessons more engaging and accessible.
Please consider giving, any amount will help. These kids deserve the best. I have taught this book to several grades and it is always a well-loved and remembered read.
