This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Communication is Cool! Many students here at Engleburg Elementary have unique ways of communicating. One such way is through picture symbols. They point to pictures that they want in a communication book, or use a device with pictures to request and comment.

Our students range in ages from 3-12.

They are in grades K3-5. Many of them have special needs, including autism, intellectual disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, and other disabilities relating to seizures or other neurological disorders. All of our students receive free lunch, so we are a high poverty school.

My Project

Many of our students do not use words to communicate, but instead rely heavily on pictures to comment, respond to others, participate in the classroom, and make requests for basic needs. Therefore, color printers and ink are needed to make the pictures as realistic as possible. These colored pictures can be used in a communicate book, or attached to voice output devices. They are very important in giving our students a voice!

This project will make a difference because it will give students who don't usually have voice, a voice to make themselves heard.

Without the ability to communicate so that you can be understood, what else is there? Communication is key and will help our students dramatically!
