Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a class of preschoolers with special needs in South Central Los Angeles. We serve a culturally and linguistically diverse community in the inner city. Our school has limited resources, but is committed to partnering with the community and seeing our students reach their full potential.
My students have a variety of conditions, including speech and language delays, physical and intellectual disabilities, and vision impairments; sometimes, these disabilities are from Autism or other genetic disorders.
The majority of my students enroll right when they turn 3-years-old, making this their first school experience. Nearly all of them come in learning to use the toilet and follow classroom routines for the very first time! They are an energetic and silly bunch of students who are eager for more opportunities to build relationships, play, and learn at their own levels.
My Project
My students know how to get messy - and I mean really messy. Nonstop playing, touching, and creating leaves our hands (along with our clothes and tables) as dirty as can be. In our program, we also eat lunch and breakfast in the classroom. Needless to say, we have a lot to clean up each and every day. Paper towels are a necessity for the cleanliness of our classroom and the health of our students, and we go through them fast.
Learning to wash hands and clean up independently is a skill that all children are developing in early childhood, but unfortunately paper hand towels for our sinks are a rare commodity at school.
We share a bathroom with one other ETK classroom of 26 students. With our two classes combined, the allotted supply of paper towels disappears way before they can be refilled. This leaves our students with wet hands and a wet restroom that feels unclean. An additional supply of paper towels for those dispensers would be a blessing to the many students who use the restrooms!
With our class of 3-4 year olds, we are also changing diapers and wiping faces throughout the day. Baby wipes are a must-have to meet their toileting and basic hygiene needs. Many of our students do not come with enough wipes, even though they need them!
