My school is a K-7 International Baccalaureate magnet program in a large, urban district. All students have music twice a week where dancing, singing and playing instruments are the heart of our music program. I always look forward to my music classes because my students are smart, curious, funny, eager and so loving! They are diverse in many ways -racially, economically, academically, socially, and emotionally.
The universal language of music brings us all together.
It is the great equalizer. On the other hand, our diversity is celebrated and brings different cultural strengths to our music-making.
My Project
This project is a continuation of past projects and will get us resources for our Little Kids Rock (LKR) program in music. LKR is teaching kids how to play the instruments in a garage band. We have most of the instruments we need, so this project is filling in some odds and ends to complete this curriculum.
Pop, R&B, Rap, Country, Rock & Roll, Reggae?
What's your favorite genre of music?
The LKR program lets students explore what they are interested in playing from rap to rock and country to pop. We just learned some basics of drumming and now are on to guitar. We have one electric guitar, so the two requested in this project will let three students practice at one time. With large classes, this gives my musicians more opportunities.
The requested capos will allow us to learn a handful of chords and then play in many different keys. I'm hoping to get enough capos for my largest class. One of our electrics popped a string last week so we need new strings on hand. Lastly, the pickup is to electrify an acoustic or a ukulele for students to hear me when I'm leading the group or for a student soloist at a concert.
As we rock and roll together, thinking about performing is important. These resources will give my students many creative opportunities to build skills that will be with them forever.
