Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am proud to be a Drama teacher in a public middle school in Astoria, New York. This is the first year that we have had a drama program, and I am excited to help jump-start this important program in our school. Our children are creative and talented, and having drama in our school highlights their abilities and gives them an outlet to express their creativity. While I adore what (and whom) I teach, I am somewhat disheartened because I do not have the right tools to make the program as comprehensive and educational as I know it could be, if given the right materials. The students have been really excited about having a drama program, and together we have been participating in some fantastic acting and improvisation workshops. However, I want to make sure that they have a comprehensive drama program...one that includes theatre history, technical theatre, and playwriting. I want the students to understand and appreciate the roots of theatre, Greek Theatre.
Studying Greek theatre helps the students understand the origins of theatrical techniques, conventional dramatic structure essential to playwriting, and the society of Ancient Greece. I have four sixth grade classes who study Ancient Greece in their social studies classes, and studying Greek theatre would help enhance their studies and would be a wonderful cross-curriculum activity.
I am asking for several copies of Greek play texts, as well as materials to make our own masks for the Greek chorus. Together, these materials will help provide a comprehensive unit on Greek Theatre. These books can be used for years to come, and the mask supplies will enliven our experience and can be worn again by the students.
