I have a wide range of learners - regular education students, special education students, and gifted learners. We come from a wide range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. No matter where they come from, or their ability level, my students need good stories.
My Project
As my 5th graders get ready to move to middle school, we explore the concept of The Hero's Journey as a common plot in literature. Students learn how the hero's path impacts the character's development and how he or she responds to challenges.
My students need access to Greek mythology about heroes, gods, and monsters in order to fully understand their novel study of The Lightning Thief.
Being able to research the rich mythology that Rick Riordan references in Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief will help students understand the trials and tribulations that this hero must endure.
In addition to the reference books on Greek mythology, we will also have the opportunity to perform Greek stories about heroes, monsters, and gods. This helps students with their fluency, while adding another layer of understanding to The Hero's Journey. Plus, it's fun!
