Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What happen to the days of being excited about going to school? It's the opposite for my students, they feel pressure to keep up. Motivating them is challenging with out-dated supplies and textbooks.
I'm looping from 3rd to 4th grade with my class in the fall.
My students are very eager to learn but we lack the resources and funds to make learning fun and engaging. My school is located in a high crime, high poverty area of NYC. Many of my students live or have lived in a shelter. Last Year our school was 10% at or above State Standards in Literacy.
My Project
The Time For Kids subscription is something we will use to help built literacy skills while keeping us up to date with current events. It really makes them feel grown up by reading magazines, and the accompanying resources aid comprehension. We will use the tissue paper to create beautiful 3-D bulletin board frames and of course, a very powerful pencil sharpener for all the writing we will put on our bulletin boards. The educational games will infuse social skills and competition as well as re-enforce content knowledge. Last year I purchased educational board games for fun Friday and it was a great success. This year we have a Smartboard but we don't have games for it and I can't use the games from last year.
4th grade is a benchmark grade.
It's the year that the students should begin to show progress. I feel with all the changes in education, the fun and excitement of learning has been lost and replaced with fear and anxiety. Please help us make it fun again!
