Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students participate in a high school classroom designed to educate students with severe/profound intellectual disabilities.

My special needs students are from low-income households and receive free lunch, in a school with a limited budget to provide the materials necessary for my students.

The goal of the classroom is to increase academic skills, while also developing functional life skills and increasing life and career readiness. Several of my students are English Language Learners, most come from low-income backgrounds, and several have sensory needs. My students stay with me for several years. Many come to school daily, even if they are ill, as school is a place for them to be with others, receive meals, and be comfortable.

My Project

My class has been building up our supply of items needed for life skills cooking classes. We could use a new refrigerator, as the one we have is very old and no longer works consistently.

Using a refrigerator to correctly store food is an important lesson for my students.

This will help them to live more independently in the future. The students will be learning which foods need refrigeration and which do not.

During this time of COVID, my students eat lunch in our classroom. Having a working refrigerator will help us keep their food fresh.
