My Students
The majority of my students live in the Budget Suites. There may be more than six people sleeping in a small room. Recently we had three children selling their personal items to help their mom pay the rent at the Budget Suites. Some students sleep in cars. Yet these students still come to school. They share everything: clothes, personal care items, school supplies, food.
I have seen students taking food home to feed their families.
One hundred percent of my students receive free lunches. For some of our students, the food they receive at school is the only food they receive.
My Project
You can never have enough personal care items (deodorant, chap stick, toothpaste. toothbrushes). My children run, jump, eat and sweat. They receive education about their personal hygiene.
At my school we have the freshen up room, my clinic, they come to my clinic and receive the necessary supplies to freshen up.
I dispense personal care items to the students but sometimes they forget to bring them or just need additional supplies. You would be helping to give my students confidence. When you do not have the necessary personal care items you are already set up for failure.The students can learn better when they are not concerned about how they look or smell. Can you take a test or be around other people when you are worried about what they think? How do you feel when you are constantly self conscious?
