I am the lucky teacher of 23 amazing, smart, fun, energetic, artistic, creative, and amusing third graders. We live in a small, rural community. Our school has a diverse culture. Included in our boundary is a Native American reservation from which a good part of our student body comes.
Our students all qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
Even though our cultures and economic situations are varied, our school is a welcoming place of learning, working together, and providing the best for our children.
My Project
In third grade, we have an entire unit on money! We have incorporated financial literacy into this unit because we feel as though it is a topic that students can learn at a young age, and one that will help them throughout their lives. It is important to know the value of money!
Through books such as, "It's Not Fair!" students learn about the difference between wants and needs, and having enough.
The book "The Wrong Shoes" teaches about self-esteem as well as the value of money and what is most important. Books such as "You Can't Buy a Dinosaur with a Dime" and "If you made a Million" teach the value of money and how much it is worth, and what you can buy with the money you have earned.
We also incorporate math into this unit because money is a great way to understand fractions and parts of a whole. "Once Upon a Dime" and "A Dollar, a Penny, How much and how Many?" teach the mathematical side of money.
Through reading these great picture books about financial literacy, students will come to understand the importance of hard work, saving, spending, planning and appreciating the value of hard earned money.
