This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from a diverse background . We are a Title I school with 90% of students that receive free lunch and a community with a high poverty rate. I am a music teacher at Harrington School, I realized that providing a child with the knowledge to play an instrument is a powerful tool.

"I can't wait until the weekend is over so that I can come to school to learn music", these are the words of a student who has discovered music.

My Project

My students have formed a rock band at school. The instruments that students are currently using are items that have been donated. We are missing one component in order to make the band complete. We are in need of an electric bass.

Music has demonstrated to help uplift and relieve

symptoms of depression, reduce stress and improve cognitive performance. It is a positive outlet for our community. The students have gained an extreme appreciation for music. For example, they come to music class eager to expand their growing repertoire of songs. Attendance has also improved as a result of this.
