My Students

I teach grades 3-5 at a school in a rural setting. Almost half of my students are considered low socio-economic and I have 14 English as a Second Language students, and 100 students who qualify for special education. Out of my 650 students, only 150 are involved in extra curricular activities. I would like to increase the number of students involved by creating after school musical opportunities. All 650 of my students are energetic and love music. They love playing instruments, clapping rhythms, singing, and composing rhythms and melodies.

My Project

My students love playing the Orff instruments. However, I only have 7 instruments for classes of 28 students. Students have to wait 3 turns before they get to play, and only get to play for a few minutes because it is time to switch again. The bass metallophone I am requesting will give my students not one, but essentially two instruments, because it is large enough to have two students play on it at a time. The bass metallophone will be used to fulfill the state requirement of melodies in the classroom, but more importantly it will be used for creating music. My students will be able to use this instrument for lessons on composing, improvisation, and learning to read notation. The bass xylophone will also add a bass component which is essential to music!
