Help me give my students all the materials needed to create and maintain an interactive notebook. We need composition books, tape, mini envelopes, colored pencils, glue sticks, and colorful paper.
My 9th grade social studies class includes an exciting group of 56 young adults with a wide variety of interests, abilities, and goals. We are part of a career and technical high school program and our students do not have a traditional high school experience. Our students come from all over the county to get a high school and community college experience. Our classroom focuses on collaboration, growth-mindset, acceptance, open-mindedness, and inclusion so that we can gain more insight in historical lessons without fear or judgment.
In this class, we build a classroom community that works together to explore history through an empathetic lens to better understand our shared human story.
I teach in a wing of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade classrooms. As students’ progress through our classes they venture throughout the college campus taking courses which allows them graduate with a high school diploma, certificates, licenses, and or associate degrees. My classroom is about learning history in a broader context so that we focus on the human experience. The work we do in this classroom is about accepting others and their differences, experiencing history with an opened mind, and the inclusion of all in history.
My Project
The use of interactive notebooks (INB) is the focus of daily activities in my classroom. Combined with the lessons and technology available in our Google Classroom, INB’s provide the Hands-on learning that immerses students into the historical topics were are studying. Interactive notebooks are the best vehicle to incorporate multiple learning styles. As the semester progresses our notebooks become thicker with Cornell Notes, vocabulary, foldables, maps, charts, etc. Interactive notebooks provide students with a comprehensive place for them to show and share their historical studies. What becomes a problem is the fact that many students do not have the means to afford the initial materials required to start INB’s much less the ongoing costs of materials such as glue sticks, tape, color pencils, etc.!

Students will be able to simply focus on the academic materials at hand, and not the materials needed to complete daily lessons.
