Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students just turned three years old. I am piloting a three-year-old half-day program in an inner-city low-income school.
The children are excited and ready to learn.
Most of the students I serve are English language learners and will be in a bilingual program.
The mission of this program is to teach children English and sustain their Spanish speaking skills. By starting early, this will give them a head start on their educational journey. This will enable them to have many opportunities in their futures, but also facilitate educational success.
My Project
My students need a variety of balls, hopscotch mat, and equipment cart to use on our playground during recess time.
In this day and age, many of my preschool students are not getting enough outdoor structured or unstructured play time.
It is important, for their gross motor development ,to be able to play a variety of games that involve balls and a new game like hopscotch.
Many of my students have never played or seen a hopscotch game. I remember that was one of my favorite games that motivated me to get up and move! Providing this hopscotch mat on the playground , would provide them not only with an opportunity to learn a new game but one that helps develop balance, coordination, and gross motor development.
By providing them with a variety of balls they can easily begin by learning how to play catch, which seems simple but for preschoolers learning how to toss and catch are part of their gross motor development. It also provides opportunities to practice sharing and patience as they are playing.
Being able to provide balls and a hopscotch mat, during their recess time, would make recess fun and at the same time helping them grow in many ways.
