"It's Friday! Friday! Friday! Don't wanna work, I want to play!" This is a favorite chant of my fifth graders who visit at least three classrooms each Friday, singing and being praised for their hard work that they have completed that week.
The students' enthusiasm for celebrating their hard work permeates throughout the entire building.
They are positive role models to the younger grade levels in our school. I really strive to teach my students to be the positive role models I know they can be.
We also have a local National Guard Unit in our area and have a lot of military families with parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins serving in our beautiful country. Our staff also has the opportunity to focus on the homeless students in our area by attending workshops and lectures to meet the needs of our students. We are dedicated to helping our students and their families in every way we can.
My Project
Our school loves to involve our students' families. We invite them to a variety of activities that promote family engagement throughout the school year. Our school is in need of a new microphone system because the old one has been used so much it has worn out. We use the microphones to speak and complete activities to involve parent nights and activities. We also need cables, a longer extension cord and batteries to go into the microphones.
One of my most favorite activities is inviting our families to our fifth grade photo night.
This is where students bring their family for a special photo. This photo will be taken in front of our green screen so that we can use it for many different photos throughout the year. All we have to do is change the background when we print the picture and we have a whole new photo.
Our students love to bring their parents and their families into the classroom to show them what is going on in our room. The photo paper and computer ink is used to print the photos and then I hang them in our classroom so that my students know that both their parents and myself support them whole heartedly. It is amazing to watch my students during a test or a difficult assignment look up at their family photo to remind them that their parents are cheering and rooting for them to do their best. It really does help my students and I have seen a huge boost of confidence with my students just because of that one simple photo! Both the kids and their families love to see that they are important assets to our classroom. It is definitely all about engaging the families!!!
