"Creepy crawlies and slimy swimmers! We love them in our fifth grade science class. In fact, the slimier the better as far as we're concerned. There's just one problem. We don't have anywhere to keep them, and our teacher is tired of chasing escaping critters around the room. Won't you help?"
I am a fifth grade science teacher, with approximately 60 students, in an inner city school. About 1/2 of my students are second language learners. My students have limited experiences in science and the outdoors, and I am always looking for ways to bring real world science into the classroom. They love science, and the learning that takes place is more meaningful when students are able to work with live specimens and not just pictures in books. I can see how much impact the "hands on" approach has had on my students, especially the ESL children, who need concrete models to develop their vocabulary.
I would like to have an aquarium and a terrarium with live animals so that my students can better understand different ecosystems and how living organisms interact.
