Our small school is located in a poor, rural, farming community. The majority of our students live in low-income households. Many live with grandparents or relatives that are on fixed incomes. Some live in homes with more than two families. Our county school participates in CEP (Community Eligibility Program) which provides every person in our school a free breakfast and free lunch. A weekend backpack program sends food home for the weekends.
Our students are special to us.
Because we are a small school, we love and care for one another like in a family or tribe. We want our students to know they are special and know they are loved and we want them to feel confident in all school situations.
Our school tries to incorporate social studies with reading skills. I have noticed if the material is outdated, the students do not relate well. First, we will utilize the articles with a partner and then, I will use the magazine in stations for extra reading practice.
The Time for Kids magazine offers current news articles that are interesting to read.
Students will improve non-fiction reading skills while enjoying what they read.
We can gain background knowledge when introduced to various topics in the magazine. Our students peer read with a partner also. This introduces facts and opinions. It will also help students recognize the non-fiction features of a magazine.
