I teach first grade in a rural school outside a large city. Our school system is constantly growing like wildfire. Because of this growth, we do not have the necessary funds to purchase items other than the basics. I would like to acquire math big books to help students learn about mathematical concepts while learning to read at the same time. WOW! Meeting two objectives with one big book! Having these books will be a time-saving tool as well as a great investment in students' learning. Big books are extremely important to use with beginning readers. The big book allows us to meet as a group, where all students can easily see and read the text. The large pictures ensure that all students can see the concepts/skills we are learning. It is so wonderful to be able to reach all students and not hear a child say "I can't see!" With big books, teachers don't hear those words and that is music to our ears because we know all students are able to be engaged in the lesson. Math and Reading go hand and hand. It's great to teach math concepts through reading! What an awesome way to do both! The most I can expose my students to within the short amount of time I have during the day, then I want to make that happen. Having access to these big books will provide that.
