My Students

My students are among the kindest and most resilient people I know. Their ages range from 5 years to 15 years, including Kindergarten through 8th grade. My students live in the inner city and come from diverse backgrounds. Some of them are displaced and even homeless. Many of my students live below the poverty level, but fortunately they are all able to receive free breakfast and free lunch at school.

More than 300 of my students deal with chronic medical conditions.

Some of my students have significant cardiac and respiratory conditions unbeknownst from outward appearances. Despite these challenges, my students come to school eager to learn academic, social and behavioral skills to prepare them for success. They make me smile every day and remind me that "It Is A Wonderful Life"!

My Project

Our school is fortunate to have an AED. An AED is an "Automatic External Defibrillator". When someone is in cardiac arrest, the AED delivers a shock to the heart, similar to jump-starting a car. Sudden Cardiac Arrest can happen anytime, anywhere and to anyone. When an AED is readily available, survival rates increase dramatically. The AED uses voice prompts to assist the rescuer, and so it can easily be operated by trained and even untrained persons, including students.

The AED uses special adhesive pads that are attached to the victim's chest.

The pads enable the shock to be delivered from the machine to the victim. However, these AED pads do have expiration dates and ours will soon expire. We will need to replace the expired AED pads to ensure that, in the event of a cardiac arrest, the AED will be fully functional. In short, if the AED pads are not working, then the AED will not work either.

Hopefully, we will not ever need to use our AED. But we Must Always be prepared to help our school community in the event of a cardiac arrest.
