In my classroom, I am not only the art teacher, but I am also the "glue bottle surgeon." Any artwork that requires the use of glue in my classroom also requires me to refine my skills of operating on glue bottles for my students.
I teach art to students in grades kindergarten through fifth in a Title One school in a rural community.
My students receive fifty minutes of art each week. This is my second year teaching in this school and I have found my students enjoy drawing and learning new art concepts and techniques. They enjoy seeing the work of their classmates and that of other grade levels and ask lots of questions about how artwork is made. One question I am often asked is "When will we get to make that?"
My Project
When using traditional glue bottles in my classroom, students become frustrated with clogs and bottles running low on glue. Before classes enter my room, I try to make sure that a class set of glue bottles is ready to be used. During class, I end up pulling tops off glue bottles to unclog them with a scissor blade or plastic needle. Sometimes the cap is impossible to remove for me to be able to refill the bottle. When the bottles work, I am constantly reminding students to use only tiny dots of glue. The resources I am requesting will help my first through fifth grade students spend more time on their artwork-collages, paper sculptures, weavings-and be more conservative in their use of glue. No more dripping with glue artwork!
I am also requesting glue sticks for my kindergarten students who may be using glue for the very first time. Glue sticks are easier for them to handle and use.
I found the idea on Pinterest to use non-spill paint pots with paste spreaders.
This could solve our dilemma! The paint pots would be very easy to fill and students would use less glue using a paste spreader. Students would be able to spend more time on their artwork and less time waiting on me to operate on their glue bottles. Happy students and a happy teacher!
