I am a kindergarten teacher at an elementary school in San Francisco's Chinatown district. My students are energetic 5-year-olds who are learning English as their second language. The majority of my students live in 1 bedroom apartments or studios and lack space and resources. I would like to provide my students with an environment that fosters and develops their awareness and understanding of other cultures. My students rarely venture out of Chinatown, because their parents work long hours. They lack transportation and they are timid about visiting other neighborhoods. The classroom is a great place where my students have an opportunity to learn about other cultures, their similarities and differences. Having the necessary materials will expose and familiarize my students to different cultures in San Francisco and around the world. The materials I am requesting are multicultural music CDs, books, book boxes, photo library and a globe. Each year I have 20 students. These materials will last many years and help many little 5 year-olds develop their awareness and understanding of other cultures.
