It's A Small World After All

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Sometimes my students do not believe anything microscopic exists! The "Small World" is beyond their comprehension. If they can not see it or touch it or feel it, they have a difficult time understanding basic cell biology or Life Science for seventh grade. Our microscopes are antiquated, our labs in disrepair. It is difficult to show students the physical reality of the microscopic world without real microscopes! Having prepared slides for them would be a great addition to the microscopes because we do not have all the necessary clean up facilities in my room.

I have a thirty percent interest rate in the Life Science/Biology/BioTech career fields, according to a first week survey of my classes. Students were interested in medicine, animal medicine, cloning, emergency medical technology, forensic sciences, and pharmacology. They were quite clueless as to how to obtain the necessary skills to enter into a higher educational program to study these vocations. Our Science program has recently expanded to a year long experience, also incorporating a Health component. Our school has realized the potential of our students to enter a four year university through our "Compact For Success" program, which currently pays tuition for deserving students to a four year university. We have been trying to give students more opportunity to be prepared for high school lab sciences which help them enter university.

My students will benefit greatly from the study of cell biology. It is one of our standards which makes sense for students. They will be able to distinguish plant, animal, bacteria, fungi cells. They can really have a hands on experience which will increase their curiosity and excitement about the Life Science fields. My students will experience a "Small World" they never thought existed!

Your gift will make it possible for many students to become first time college attendees in their families. Many will be first time high school graduates as well. We have moderate poverty levels at our school site, which makes our students more socially disadvantaged than others. Our school culture would be greatly influenced by the generosity of donors because we do not have adults who model this behavior to the students. Our students are very careful with the equipment we do have because they understand the value of educational materials. Your gift may inspire the next future cancer researcher! Thanks for your consideration of my students.
