Since our inception, our school has been dedicated to educating the whole child by offering a rich dynamic educational program. We provide an exciting alternative to traditional schools. Our classroom is based on developmentally appropriate teaching methods that accommodate the whole child with respect to individual learning styles, developmental readiness, and rates of achievement. Multiple-age classrooms, collaborative teaching, a high level of parent participation, and community involvement greatly contribute to developing our environment into a world-class learning community.
Our focus is developing innovative programs designed to accommodate the diverse needs of all students, including those who are historically underachieving or academically disadvantaged, to challenge and engage students to master state academic content and to meet or exceed state achievement standards.
Teachers are encouraged to develop a creative environment that fosters students becoming a real part of their own learning.
My Project
Actor Alan Alda once said, “The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover is yourself.” Gardens are a magical place for children, full of opportunities to learn and develop appreciation for the natural world. Chasing butterflies, watching towering sunflowers, waiting eagerly for seeds to sprout are only the tiniest tip of the green iceberg. There are so many benefits when children are encouraged to garden. Growing plants is a wondrous and magical thing and should be part of every child’s upbringing, regardless of where they live. But what happens when outdoor space is an issue?
Children need the opportunity to design, plant and nurture a garden which grows from the seeds of their own imagination.
For this reason, I want to provide my students with a wide variety of craft materials, such as craft sticks, feathers, bells, succulents and miniatures while allowing them to create their own small world in the form of a fairy garden. Designing and tending a fairy garden will allow their imaginations to soar. There are no rules, no guidelines and no restrictions. Creative gardening relaxes the mind and feeds the soul. It allows unique opportunities for conversations and sharing. My students will be able to work on their fairy gardens outside and bring them into the classroom for safe keeping. It is a perfect solution for our gardening space issues while encouraging a deeper appreciation of nature.
