My students need these novels to continue the excitement of reading. When the students are all reading the same novel at the same time, they all become equal readers.
My students range in reading ability from two years below grade level to on level readers. Almost half of the students are eligible for the government's free and reduced-price lunch programs. They receive free snacks during the school day and carry home a bag of donated groceries one day each week.
Some students have parents in jail, rehabilitation programs, or have passed due to violent acts.
A few students are enrolled in special education programs. Many other students fall between the cracks. Although they are struggling learners, they don't qualify for special services.
My Project
My students range from reading 2 years below level to half a year above. While reading the novel "Wonder", my students developed a love of reading. "Auggie and Me" is a companion book to "Wonder" and continues to tell the story of how a child born with a facial birth defect has a positive impact on the lives of others. "Snow Treasure" is a historical fiction selection. It is the story of a group of boys that fool Nazis by using their sleds to get past the Nazis with nine million dollars in gold. Both stories encourage students to be positive and caring members of society.
Each child had his/her own copy of the book to follow along while I read in class.
In addition, the students are motivated to take the book home and read more. The next morning when they enter the classroom they can't wait to share with me what they read the night before.
The parents have shared with me how wonderful it is to see their children curled up on the sofa and reading a book. The children are motivated to read.
These materials will help my students to continue the excitement of reading and isn't that what reading is supposed to be all about?
